Our practice now combines the dynamic and talented staffs of VCA Wright Pet Hospital and Fort Collins Animal Hospital under one roof. Drs. Heather Steyn, Mary Wright, Sofia Arthur, Sarah Haugo, and Christie Long, along with the rest of our dedicated team, are eager to provide your pet with the highest quality medical care. We would like to educate you regarding an emerging deadly bacterial disease in dogs that is also dangerous to you and your family! This disease is called Leptospirosis. We have been vaccinating dogs for this disease since January of 2005 at VCA Fort Collins Animal Hospital during regular wellness exams. As of December 1st 2006, we are now going to require that all dogs that are being housed in the hospital, boarding facility and grooming are all vaccinated for Leptospirosis. This is due to the increased number of cases seen in our area and the potential danger to our staff as well as to your pet and your family. The new vaccine for Leptospirosis is a separate vaccination that covers for the 4 “serovars” or types of bacteria that are currently causing the disease. There is an initial vaccination and then a required booster given 3 weeks later. This vaccine is an annual vaccination after the initial 2 are given. This is a new vaccination with a very low reaction rate that has replaced an older vaccine that had a higher reaction rate.
